READING PASSAGE

Your school is celebrating Grandparents' Day. Your teacher has asked you to read this story to your classmates to remind them to appreciate their grandparents. You will now present the story to the class.

Every evening, Xin Yi's grandmother waited at the void deck with a cold bottle of chrysanthemum tea. And every evening, Xin Yi rushed past her with barely a wave, eager to get home to her shows.

One Tuesday, the void deck was empty. Grandma had sprained her ankle and was resting upstairs. The walk to the lift had never felt so long.

That night, Xin Yi found an old biscuit tin in the living room. Inside were photographs of a young woman cycling to a kampong school, carrying a little girl on her back. The little girl was Xin Yi's mother.

"Grandma cycled ten kilometres every day just to send Mum to school," her father said quietly. "Rain or shine, she never missed a day."

The next evening, Xin Yi filled a bottle with barley water and knocked on Grandma's door.

"It's my turn to wait on you," she announced.

Grandma's laughter, her father said later, could be heard three floors down.
