READING PASSAGE
Your class is learning about family traditions. During an English lesson, your teacher selected you to share this story with the class. You will now present the story to the class.
"Again," said Grandma.
Mei Ling stared at the mess on the kitchen table. Her third popiah had burst like a party popper, scattering turnip and egg across the flour-dusted surface. Rolling popiah looked so easy when Grandma did it!
"The skin is not a wrapper," Grandma said, laying a fresh sheet on Mei Ling's palm. "It is a blanket. Tuck the filling in gently, like you are putting a baby to sleep."
Mei Ling took a deep breath. She spooned the filling, folded in the sides, and rolled — slowly this time, listening for the soft crackle of the thin skin. The popiah held.
At dinner that evening, she watched nervously as Uncle Bala took the first bite. He chewed, paused, and looked around the table.
"Who made this one?"
"Mei Ling did," said Grandma, before she could answer. "Fourth generation."
Mei Ling did not fully understand why her eyes suddenly felt hot. But she understood the word 'generation' a little better now.
